OUR TOPIC THIS TERM

Autumn -  Fire Fire Fire!

This term we will be basing our learning around the historical event The Great Fire of London. Children will experience two Magic Moment days where they will get to meet a visitor from the past and get up close to a real 21st Century fire engine. It is going to be a very exciting start to our new academic year!

English

Children this half term will be asked to sequence and re write parts of the Traditional Tale The Gingerbread Man. Children will listen and recite familiar parts of Traditional Tales focusing on repetition of language. Also in English children will be attempting to write and explanation text about the events of the Great Fire of London, children will be completing this using the online computer platform Purple Mash. 

These are the outcomes children are expected to meet this half term:

  • To write for a variety of purposes
  • To use adverbs
  • To use the correct tense
  • To organise writing for its purpose
  • To use sentences appropriately
  • To vary the way sentences begin
  • To use letter names to spell words
  • To read aloud writing clearly so others can hear

 Maths

Children will be learning skills in place value, addition and subtraction of 1 and 2 digit numbers and geometry. 

These are the outcomes children are expected to meet:

  •  To be able to count to 100 forwards and backwards
  • To be able to read and write numbers up to 100
  • To be able to give 1 more and 1 less of a number
  • To be able to count in steps of 2,3,5 and 10.
  • To be able to recognise the value of tens and ones
  • To be able to recognise the addition, subtraction and equals operation
  • To be able to use apparatus to add 1 and 2 digit numbers together
  • To be able to know number bonds to 20
  • To be able to recognise common 2D and 3D shapes
  • To be able to recognise some 2D and 3D shape properties

 

Science 

Children will be learning about different materials in the everyday world in Science this term. Children are taught Science as a stand alone lesson on Tuesday afternoons by Mrs Khan. She is sure to make all her Science lessons very exciting! 

These are the outcomes children are expected to meet:

  • To be able to identify wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock
  • To be able to describe the everyday materials of an object
  • To be able to compare materials on their properties
  • To be able to find out what happens to materials when pressure, twisting and turning is applied
